Prom means a lot to high school students. After all, it marks the end of their school lives and the first real celebration of the future.

When you walk into a prom, you can immediately feel the excitement in the air. Look around and you’ll see students laughing, taking pictures, and having the time of their lives.

That excitement actually stays with those students. Even years later, they will hear one of those prom songs, and that will take them back to that room.

At DJ Dave Entertainment, we have had the pleasure of DJing many prom nights in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Schools like Littleton High and The Bromfield School keep calling us back because they have seen firsthand that we know how to create a night that students will remember for a lifetime.

That trust is everything to us, so we always do our best to live up to it.

A successful prom always starts with a plan

We begin preparing for prom weeks—or even months—before the big night. Our prom DJ works closely with the prom committee or school coordinator to understand their vision, the atmosphere they want to create, and any special details that will make the night unforgettable.

With careful planning and attention to every detail, we ensure that the evening runs smoothly, the music keeps everyone on their feet, and the night becomes a memorable celebration for all.

Two weeks before prom, we like to check in one last time

Around two weeks before prom, we schedule a final phone call with the school’s planning team or point of contact. This is where we go over our playlist, confirm the timeline, and take care of any last-minute changes.

We have been a part of many proms over the years, but we still treat each new one like it is the biggest one yet. Because for the students, it really is.

When entering the prom

When students walk through the door, our music gives them a feel for what kind of night they are about to have.

At one prom, we kicked things off with “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter and “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan. Right away, students began smiling, and we could tell it was going to be a fun night.

So how do we do it?

Well, our DJs know what is trending on TikTok, what songs are climbing the charts, and what students are loving right now.

But we don’t just press play on a random playlist. We are always watching the crowd, feeling the mood, and making live adjustments to keep the night fun and exciting.

We make sure all the music is appropriate too

We only play clean edits of songs. And even if a song is technically “clean,” we will skip it if it still feels not so school-friendly.

Our High School Prom DJs know where the line is and they never cross it. We know how to keep the party fun for students while still keeping it respectful, and that is a big reason schools trust us.

Students still get to dance to the songs they love. And teachers or parents in the room don’t have to worry about anything inappropriate blasting through the speakers.

During dinner, we shake things up a little

When it is time for dinner, we change the type of music we are playing. We still keep the music fun, but we do dial it down just enough so people can actually talk without yelling over the speakers.

This is also when we go on the mic to give quick updates, like reminders about the photo booth or when dancing starts.

One thing students always seem to love is the song request list.

We hand out a short form before prom so students can write down what songs they want to hear. It’s a small thing to do, but it makes the night feel so much more personal and memorable for those students.

We also save those requests and look back at them to see which songs keep showing up year after year. That is how we are able to stay in touch with what students are into these days.

When the dance floor opens, the fun starts

After dinner, we play an energetic upbeat set made just for that night. Our DJ might start with throwbacks from the 90s or 2000s, then go into hits from the 2010s, and mix in the latest trending songs.

We keep our eyes on the crowd the entire time and follow where they are going. If they are feeling pop, we lean into that. If they want hip-hop or EDM, we are ready for that as well. And sometimes, a little country or rock sneaks in and totally works.

Everything is mixed live, and we don’t use the same playlist twice.

One assistant principal even told us recently, “They didn’t want to leave. They stayed on the floor until the last beat dropped.” That is the kind of night we want to create. One where everyone has so much fun they never want it to end.
